Description: It is ironic that some of Woody Guthrie's best songs were written as pro-government propaganda. In May 1941, he was hired to promote the federal dams on the Columbia River, especially the enormous Coulee Dam, whose construction apparently destroyed the Colville Indian community by cutting off their supply of salmon. Woody travelled around the Columbia Basin, writing 26 songs in 30 days. This song, to the tune of "Wabash Cannonball" is one of the most effective. |
