Description:

after some tweaking and fixing of fuel leaking problems and circuit breaker overloading, we got this 1951 j-34 to run real well. since it runs on 100LL avgas, a nice flame shoots out the back at start up, but that's all that's exciting to watch, i guess you had to be there to enjoy the roar! there's a golf ball hanging on the fence that suffered minor burns.

The FCU of this engine works better than ours, but we have more flame than yours, lol. We atually cut off the fuel when the engine got fired up, then advance the throttle again. By that way less flame will be produced at start. By the way, I think it's not the avgas which produces flame, our engine running by jet fuel has even more flame. Nice work though.

not sure on the H.P. but these were around 3000 lbs of thrust. pretty tiny compared to modern stuff. we only let it idle at around 30% RPM. max rpm is 12,500 so it was probably around 4,000. the engine was so old, and since we were just a school, we couldn't really open it up to hear more roar.

Great video! We had a whole bunch of J-34 engines in my A&P school, we completely tore them down and built them back up. They had another mounted in a pylon for a P-2V neptune that was in a test cell. What a screamer!

Was this originally produced by Wright? I'm getting a bit rusty in my old age. Lovely video. Thanks.

if i remember right, i believe it was a company called Westinghouse that made it. kind of a dinosaur compared to modern turbines.

Yes your right. Such a long time ago. They seemed very powerful to us then! Thanks for the info.

It will put out less thrust on 100LL than with kero because the fuel has a lower energy density.

Have found some old books. This engine powered The Mcdonnel Banshee and was used as a booster on The Lockheed Neptune, and The Fairchild Provider. It produced 3,500 Lbs Thrust at 12,500 RPM. EPR around 4.35-1. Saw one of those Neptunes about 50 years ago with the jets running!
